Step-by-Step Measuring Guide for Children's Feet

In an ideal world you would get your child’s feet measured in a shoe shop by an ‘expert’. However, at Shoes On we realise this is not always convenient and in many cases the service provided in shoe shops is less than satisfactory. Therefore we have compiled a ‘rough guide’ to measuring and some guidance on assessing how well your childs’ shoes fit when you receive your order from us. [ Click here for video guides ]

Ensure the child is wearing the correct socks for the product you are interested in buying.

To get a good measurement you need a hard flooring, like in a kitchen, place two pieces of A4 paper butt against the skirting board of a wall.

Get the child to stand unaided (not leaning on you or the wall) with the back of their ankles touching the skirting board on the A4 paper.  They need to stand up straight like a Soldier or Princess, with their head held high.

Making sure your pencil is completely vertical, mark off the longest toe.  You now have the foot length.

Now measure the length between the longest toe and the end of the paper in millimeters (mm) using your ruler or tape measure. Repeat with the other foot.

It is helpful to know foot lengths for each foot as it is common for these measurements to be different on each foot. However, to determine the UK size when ordering, take the longest foot length.

Some of our ranges come in half and European sizes.  If the foot is slightly over the full UK size and up to half way between two sizes, then use this half size (or European size).

eg the child measures 178 on the left foot and 180 on the right foot, then she is a size 11.5 (Euro 30) as she is half way between an 11 and 12.

If only whole sizes are available in the style you like, we would suggest going up a size in this and buy a 12, unless we have advised you that a style comes up big!
